Are You One of the 90% of People in Danger of Diabetes in America?

Most people have heard about the problem of diabetes in America and the rapidly rising percent of Americans with diabetes today. But they may not be aware of their personal risk or a preliminary stage of diabetes called prediabetes.

The Danger of Diabetes in America

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 86 million Americans are currently affected by early signs of prediabetes. Even more troubling is that 90% of Americans already have prediabetes, but have no idea that they have it and no knowledge of its risks. And 15% to 30% of people with prediabetes are expected to develop type 2 diabetes within the next five years.

Campaigning for America’s Health

In an effort to educate people about the health risks of prediabetes and prevent them from becoming one of the already high percent of Americans with diabetes, the CDC is launching a campaign promoting prevention and awareness. The campaign will emphasize that simple changes in daily diet and activity levels can greatly reduce the risk of prediabetes developing into type 2 diabetes, which can lead to a lifetime of major health problems.

Along with teaching people about positive lifestyle changes, the campaign will encourage taking a test for prediabetes. This test will let people know if they currently have prediabetes or are at risk of developing it so they can make the lifestyle changes that could help save their lives.
