Avoid Skin Cancer by Being Bright About Sun Exposure

This summer while you’re spending more time in the sun, it’s important to protect yourself from the dangers of skin cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it’s the most common kind of cancer in the nation. Fortunately, simply staying safe while in the sun can protect you against all types of skin cancer, from the most common kinds like basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, to melanoma, the most dangerous. Since Florida residents and visitors face a great deal of sun throughout the year, our team at MD Now wants to share some bright ideas for skin cancer prevention and encourage everyone to avoid extended sun exposure and sunburns. If you experience a serious sunburn or other common dermatologic issue, visit your nearest MD Now where we can provide you with relief or refer you to a dermatologist if more advanced treatment is needed.

While being smart about the sun is essential for protecting yourself from skin cancer, you need to realize that other personal and lifestyle factors also affect your overall risk, such as your genetics, your propensity for moles, and your individual DNA. But health experts have found that seeing a dermatologist for regular cancer screenings can significantly reduce the incidence of basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma by providing early detection. And research shows that early detection increases the success rate of treatment.

Interestingly, some parts of the country are helping their community members avoid skin cancer. In Michigan, the health department is investing grant money in purchasing and installing sunscreen dispensers in six of the community’s parks and recreational areas. They have the means to install these dispensers in five additional locations. Each sunscreen dispenser will be filled with a large enough amount of sunscreen to last the entire summer.

In addition to providing the dispensers, the state is also presenting sun-smart classes taught by nurses and health educators at various locations. These classes are being offered to bring awareness to residents, visitors, and school children about potential skin cancers and teach them how to detect basal and squamous cell carcinoma, as well as melanoma.

At MD Now, we want you and your family to stay safe in the sun and would be happy to provide you with additional tips for skin cancer prevention and we are here for you in the event excessive sun exposure and sunburn do occur.
