It’s Critical to Know the Link Between High Blood Pressure and Diabetes

Doctors are on high alert because a major new study found that people with high blood pressure have an almost 60% higher chance of developing diabetes. While the connection between diabetes and high blood pressure has long been suspected, this study now reliably shows a direct medical link. Experts hope that confirming the connection between high blood pressure and diabetes will lead to more research, advances, and strategies for treating both diseases. At MD Now, we strive to keep the community aware of issues that may affect health. We’re sharing these medical findings to help people know the risks of not taking care of their health.

Hope for Help

While these findings may be alarming to people with diabetes, researchers believe they provide an avenue to hope. Confirming the connection between diabetes and high blood pressure brings medical experts one step closer to understanding and treating both diseases effectively. For now, researchers are uncertain whether one causes the other, but they want people with high blood pressure to know their chance of developing diabetes, as well as people with diabetes to be aware of their risk of high blood pressure.

Studying the Relationship Between High Blood Pressure and Diabetes

For the study, researchers analyzed the health records of 4.1 million adults in the UK who were initially free of both diabetes and heart disease. Then, they factored in from 30 earlier studies on risk factors for diabetes and found similar results. The main findings included:

  • A 58% higher risk of developing diabetes for every 20 mm mercury increase in systolic blood pressure.
  • A 52% greater chance of developing diabetes for every 10 mm mercury increase in systolic blood pressure.
  • Higher blood pressure was also associated with a greater risk of new-onset diabetes in both men and women from ages 30 to 90, regardless of their weight.
  • People who are elderly or overweight experienced the most effects of blood pressure and diabetes.

Now, the medical community is hoping that this research brings them closer to strategies for treatment. They also hope that knowing the link between diabetes and high blood pressure inspires people to start taking better care of their health.
