The Medical Mission to Keep Improving Americans’ High Cholesterol Levels
Did you know that one out of every eight American adults currently has high cholesterol? Making matters worse, an even greater number of adults have low levels of HDL cholesterol, which is the good cholesterol that removes the bad cholesterol called LDL cholesterol from the arteries. These were the frightening findings from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics.
And while there has been an overall decline in Americans’ high total cholesterol levels and low levels of the good HDL cholesterol since 2007, there are still strides to be made to completely resolve the national cholesterol problem.
Along with Americans having low levels of the good HDL cholesterol, many still suffer from high levels of LDL cholesterol, which is considered the bad cholesterol because it builds up in the arteries and contributes to heart disease.
Speaking of heart disease, another topic of concern is triglyceride levels. Triglycerides are the fat in the blood that serve as your body’s source of energy. They are similar to cholesterol because both are forms of fat that circulate through your bloodstream, but triglycerides store unused calories and give your body energy, while cholesterol helps build your cells and certain hormones. Both contribute to heart health, with higher-than-normal triglyceride levels linked to a greater risk of heart disease. So along with reducing high cholesterol levels and increasing good HDL cholesterol, Americans need to work on maintaining normal triglyceride levels to further protect themselves from heart disease.
This research should serve as a warning and wakeup call about the need for Americans to keep improving their levels of cholesterol and triglycerides to protect the health of their hearts.
