Wake-Up Call: People with Sleep Apnea Have a Higher Risk of Depression

Many people are losing sleep about the link discovered between sleep apnea and depression. According to a new Australian study, 73% of participants with sleep apnea also suffered depression. And people with the worst cases of the condition had the most severe depression. This led researchers to conclude that people with sleep apnea have a greater risk for depression. But they also found that people receiving a sleep apnea treatment called continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy decreased their degree of depression. MD Now cares about our community and hopes that sharing this information will prevent people with sleep apnea from mistaking their condition for depression so they can get the treatment they need.

Sleep on These Details About Sleep Apnea and Depression

When the study began, many of the participants with sleep apnea were extremely depressed and reported suicidal thoughts. But following three months of CPAP therapy, their depression decreased dramatically and they no longer had persistent suicidal thoughts. This showed that effective sleep apnea treatment greatly reduced depressive symptoms, which validated the link between sleep apnea and depression. It should also serve as a warning to sleep apnea sufferers that their condition may be misdiagnosed as depression.

Rest Assured You Receive the Proper Treatment

Based on these findings, people who experience sleep apnea should consider CPAP therapy to either reduce or prevent depressive symptoms. In addition, people with signs of depression should be screened for sleep apnea. At MD Now we can screen and test for sleep apnea using a simple process that asks about your sleep patterns, such as snoring, nighttime breathing problems, or excessive fatigue during the day. With the right diagnosis, people with sleep apnea can get the rest and relief they deserve.
